Success celebrated at Northland Construction Awards

10 Jul 2019

The Northland Branch of Civil Contractors New Zealand held its annual Construction Awards at the Northland Events Centre on 5 July with more than 200 people in attendance.

The AGM held prior to the Awards reflected a first for Northland Branch – there were six nomination for four positions available on the Executive Committee and as a result a vote from members in attendance was required.

Retiring Northland Branch secretary Tracey McKenzie said the awards themselves awards attracted a record number of entries – 38 in all beating the previous record of 32.

“The standard of entries was outstanding and kept the judges busy for several weeks.”

The awards aim to recognise and showcase the achievements of the civil contracting industry in Northland and judges were looking for excellence in the finished projects, their people, safety and the way they contribute to our community and the environment, she said.

The inaugural Women in Contracting Award – open to any level of involvement in the industry whether on the work site, in the administration team, or in management –saw a high calibre of entrants and was a closely run contest. The award, sponsored by Ten4 Engineering, was ultimately won by Kylie Wech of Downer NZ.

This year also saw CCNZ Northland Branch Life Memberships awarded to Brad Flower and Alistair McIntyre for their long and outstanding service to the Association, the Branch, and to the contracting industry itself, Ms McKenzie said.

Fantastic sponsorship support meant that attendees were able to enjoy the talent of MC Charmaine Soljak, hear from Riki Lum from Clements Contractors, who took out the 2018 Northland Excavator Operator Competition title and the 2019 National Excavator Operator Competition title, enjoy listening and dancing to band Kurfew, and go into the draw to win the fantastic door prize.

Guests enjoyed the surprise attendance of the Northland Rugby Taniwha who turned up as part of the presentation to the winner of the Hirepool Construction Projects over $1,000,000 category.

“This was another successful event and we look forward to celebrating the local successes again next year,” Ms McKenzie said.
